Dry ice blasting of wood: Removing paints, preserving surfaces

Dry ice blasting is the ideal method for cleaning wood surfaces thoroughly yet gently. It removes old paints, color, dirt, or fire damage without damaging the material. The method works dry, contact-free, and without chemicals. Especially for historical wood surfaces, profiled components, or sensitive furniture, the process offers clear advantages.

What exactly happens during dry ice blasting on wood?

During dry ice blasting, small pellets of solid carbon dioxide are shot at high speed onto the surface. They hit the wood at up to 150 m/s. The cleaning is based on three effects:

  • Cold shock: The pellets immediately cool the contamination down to minus 78 degrees. Old paints or deposits instantly become brittle.
  • Micro-explosion: The dry ice sublimates directly upon contact. This creates a local pressure impulse that detaches the loosened layer.
  • Mechanical impulse: The pellets remove the brittleness selectively, without damaging the wood mechanically.

Since dry ice turns into gas, no residues remain. Neither water nor waste is produced, and the wood remains dry and unaffected.

Why is dry ice blasting ideal for wood?

No moisture

Dry ice blasting is a completely dry process. The wood does not absorb moisture. This prevents warping, swelling, or cracking, which is crucial for solid wood, furniture, and historical structures.

No chemical residues

No chemicals are used. This is not only environmentally friendly but also protects sensitive surfaces. Residues from stain, solvents, or paint strippers are completely avoided.

No surface destruction

In contrast to sanding, no layer is removed from the wood during dry ice blasting. The material retains its original structure. Ideal for profiled surfaces, cracks, carvings, or veneers.

Typical applications in wood blasting

Paint removal from doors, windows, and furniture

Multiple coats of paint can be removed layer by layer. Thick old coatings on solid wood doors or frames also disappear without a trace. Particularly in combination with an abrasive additive, even old paints on oily wood or heavily yellowed stains can be removed.

Monument preservation and restoration

Delicate wood sculptures, half-timbered structures, church furniture, or museum objects can be cleaned without loss of substance. Even stubborn dirt, deposits from smoke, or insect residues are gently removed.

Fire damage remediation

Soot and fire residues often adhere deep in the pores of the wood. Dry ice blasting removes them without leaving any residue – without introducing new moisture into the affected components. Odors can also be significantly reduced.

Facade cleaning and outdoor wood

Weather, algae, and UV radiation leave marks. With dry ice, wooden facades, roof overhangs, or terrace coverings can be gently cleaned. The wood structure is preserved and can be recoated afterward.

Processing technology and industry

In the wood processing industry, dry ice blasting is suitable for cleaning glue presses, rollers, or CNC machines. Adhesive residues, oil, resin, or sawdust are removed without disassembling the equipment.

With or without abrasive media? Decision based on application

For very stubborn old coatings or bituminous residues, dry ice blasting can be supplemented with a fine abrasive additive. This is mixed into the blasting mixture and enhances the cleaning effect.

The advantages remain: There is no surface abrasion like with sandblasting. The wood is not roughened or damaged. The abrasive effect is selective and adjustable, from very gentle to intensive.
