Abrasive dry ice blasting: Powerful cleaning for toughest contaminants

Abrasive dry ice blasting offers you the perfect solution for particularly demanding cleaning tasks. Where normal dry ice blasting reaches its limits, the abrasive variant unfolds its full potential: Paints, rust, stubborn coatings, and heavy contaminants can be quickly, efficiently, and gently removed from materials.

Dry ice blasting: How it works

Dry ice blasting is an innovative cleaning method where small dry ice pellets are blasted onto surfaces at high speed. Cleaning is achieved through cold shock, mechanical impulse, and the sublimation of the dry ice – completely without water, chemicals, or abrasive blasting agents.

The cleaning effect is based on three principles:

  • Cold shock: The extreme cold (-79°C) causes contaminants to become brittle.
  • Mechanical impulse: The impact of the pellets loosens the dirt layers.
  • Sublimation: Upon impact, the dry ice immediately turns into gas, lifting dirt particles away and leaving no moisture or residues.

What is abrasive dry ice blasting?

In abrasive dry ice blasting, a fine blasting medium (e.g., glass beads, nut shells) is specifically added to the normal blasting process. This additional material significantly enhances the mechanical effect of the dry ice pellets, without giving up the known advantages of the process. The abrasive component allows for the effective removal of particularly stubborn layers – such as thick paint layers, rust, bitumen, or heavy deposits. At the same time, the surface remains significantly preserved compared to traditional sandblasting methods.

How does abrasive dry ice blasting work in detail?

  • Addition of blasting medium: Abrasive material is mixed with the pellets into the blast.
  • Targeted reinforcement: The impact energy is increased without damaging the surface through massive abrasion.
  • Flexible dosing: Depending on the material and cleaning objective, the amount of abrasive medium can be adjusted individually.

The result: Significantly higher cleaning performance with controlled surface conservation.

Comparison: Normal vs. Abrasive Dry Ice Blasting

Kriterium Trockeneisstrahlen Trockeneisstrahlen abrasiv
Typische Anwendungen Elektronikreinigung, Denkmalpflege, Maschinenwartung Entlackung, Rostentfernung, starke industrielle Verschmutzungen
Rückstände Keine Strahlmittelrückstände Geringe Abrasivrückstände, leicht entfernbar
Notwendigkeit von Nachbearbeitung Keine In der Regel keine, gelegentlich leichtes Abblasen notwendig

Whether normal or abrasive dry ice blasting is better suited depends on the type and degree of contamination. Light, sensitive surfaces are best cleaned with classic dry ice blasting. For sturdy coatings like paint, rust, or hard deposits, the abrasive variant provides the necessary additional effect.

At Deckert Anlagenbau, you will receive the right solution for every application – including individual consultation, test blasting, and technology precisely tailored to your needs.

Advantages of abrasive dry ice blasting

Targeted paint and rust removal without grinding

Even thick paint layers, multiple coatings, or rust deposits can be efficiently removed without thermally or mechanically overloading surfaces.

Reduced material removal compared to sandblasting

Despite high cleaning power, the base material remains largely intact – ideal for car bodies, machines, or sensitive structures.

Cleaning of hard-to-reach areas

The combination of dry ice and abrasive media allows for thorough cleaning of intricate geometries, recesses, and gaps.

No moisture, no chemicals, no blasting medium residues

Even with the abrasive process, the typical strength of dry ice blasting remains – no risk of corrosion, no complex post-cleaning.

Individually adjustable cleaning intensity

Depending on the type of contamination and surface condition, the abrasive effect can be finely adjusted – from very gentle to intense.

Efficient pretreatment for coating or painting work

Optimal surface preparation by removing old coatings and contaminants without damaging the structure.

For which applications is abrasive dry ice blasting suitable?

Abrasive dry ice blasting is used wherever traditional methods such as high-pressure water, grinding, or sandblasting reach their limits – or would cause undesirable side effects such as material removal, moisture, or chemical residues. Typical areas of application include:

Industrial cleaning

Abrasive dry ice blasting effectively removes rust, paints, and stubborn deposits from machines, plants, and production lines, without damaging sensitive components or extending downtime.

Vehicle preparation and vintage car restoration

In removing underbody protection, paint layers, or rust from body parts, the process ensures thorough cleaning without weakening the base material like sheet metal or aluminum.

Building restoration

Whether for removing fire damage, soot, or paint – abrasive dry ice blasting cleans facades, concrete surfaces, and natural stones efficiently and gently on material, even with heavily weathered surfaces.

Food and pharmaceutical industry

In areas with high hygiene requirements, the process allows residue-free removal of encrustations, hardened fats, and production residues without the use of chemicals or water.

Conservation of monuments

Historical buildings, sculptures, and delicate surfaces can be gently cleaned of dirt, old paint applications, or biological deposits with abrasive dry ice blasting, without attacking the original structure.
