Cleaning powder-coated surfaces – the best method for perfect results
Powder-coated surfaces require special attention when cleaning. Conventional methods can damage the coating or leave unwanted residues. With the right cleaning technique, dirt, grease, and deposits can be removed effortlessly – without harming the coating.
Challenges in cleaning powder-coated surfaces
Powder coatings are durable, but improper cleaning leads to the following issues:
❌ Scratches due to overly harsh or abrasive cleaning methods.
❌ Gloss changes due to chemical effects or improper care.
❌ Coating peeling when aggressive cleaners are used.
Conventional methods such as high-pressure water or aggressive chemicals are therefore unsuitable. Gentle methods like dry ice blasting are the best choice.
Tips: What to consider when cleaning powder coatings
Powder-coated surfaces are very popular in industry, facade construction, and metal constructions – they offer protection against corrosion, UV rays, and weather. However, even this durable coating requires proper care to remain attractive and functional over time. Incorrect cleaning can damage the surface, lead to loss of gloss, or reduce protective effectiveness. To ensure your coated components maintain their quality for the long term, consider the following points during cleaning:
-
Only use mild, pH-neutral cleaning agents
→ Avoid aggressive chemicals like solvents, acidic or alkaline cleaners. -
Use soft cloths or non-abrasive sponges
→ Scratching materials such as steel wool, brushes, or rough sponges can damage the surface. -
Do not use high-pressure cleaners at close range
→ Too much pressure can peel or undermine the powder coating. -
Avoid abrasive cleaners
→ These cause dull spots, loss of gloss, or micro-scratches. -
Rinse thoroughly with clear water
→ This completely removes residues and prevents spot formation. -
Do not clean in direct sunlight
→ Drying cleaning residues can cause spots and streaks. -
Regular maintenance protects against deposits and premature aging
→ Especially for heavily used components like gates, railings, facades, or machine covers.
The solution: Cleaning powder-coated surfaces with dry ice
Dry ice blasting is an innovative cleaning technique, especially suitable for sensitive surfaces like powder-coated areas. Unlike conventional methods using water, chemicals, or abrasive cleaners, dry ice blasting uses frozen carbon dioxide (CO₂) in pellet form. This method enables a thorough cleaning, without affecting the structure or gloss of the coating. It leaves no moisture or chemical residues, making it ideal for industrial applications requiring dry and gentle cleaning.
Comparison: Normal vs. abrasive dry ice blasting
| Kriterium | Trockeneisstrahlen | Trockeneisstrahlen abrasiv |
|---|---|---|
| Typische Anwendungen | Elektronikreinigung, Denkmalpflege, Maschinenwartung | Entlackung, Rostentfernung, starke industrielle Verschmutzungen |
| Rückstände | Keine Strahlmittelrückstände | Geringe Abrasivrückstände, leicht entfernbar |
| Notwendigkeit von Nachbearbeitung | Keine | In der Regel keine, gelegentlich leichtes Abblasen notwendig |
Whether normal or abrasive dry ice blasting is more suitable depends on the type and severity of contamination. Light, delicate surfaces are best cleaned with classic dry ice blasting. For robust deposits like paint, rust, or hard deposits, the abrasive variant offers the necessary additional effect.
At Deckert Anlagenbau, you receive the right solution for every application – including individual consultation, test blasting, and technology precisely tailored to your needs.

Why is dry ice blasting ideal for powder-coated surfaces?
Gentle on the coating
Powder-coated surfaces retain their original appearance and structure since no abrasive materials are used.
No water or chemicals required
As the process works completely dry, there are no residues or additional cleaning efforts needed.
Time-saving and efficient
The quick and targeted cleaning minimizes production interruptions.
Versatile application
Whether sensitive components or robust industrial facilities, the method adapts flexibly to various requirements.
Residue-free
After cleaning, there are no water or chemical residues left as the dry ice evaporates immediately. This prevents unwanted deposits and saves time-consuming rework.
This is how post-processing with dry ice works
Dry ice blasting is a multi-stage process that cleans powder-coated surfaces efficiently and gently:
1. Dry ice hits the surface
Small pellets of frozen carbon dioxide (-78.5 °C) are accelerated with compressed air and directed onto the soiled surface.
2. Shock freezing of contaminants
Upon impact, the dry ice cools the layer of dirt abruptly. This makes it brittle and it detaches from the coating.
3. Detachment through volume expansion
The dry ice pellets turn directly into gas upon contact and expand. This micro-explosion detaches the loosened dirt particles from the surface.
4. Residue-Free Cleaning
The dry ice completely evaporates without leaving moisture or chemicals. The cleaned surface remains intact and is immediately usable.
